Joomla! is one of the most used open source CMS application in the world empowering 11% of the CMS market and 2% of the entire web. And as popular and useful as it is, a lot of our customers develop their sites and apps with this tool.

Well we have great news for all of you: Joomla released last week the latest version of their platform with great improvements in different issues we will talk about. Other great news is that since the last update we’ve waited 3 years until the release of 1.6, now that long waiting has ended for all. Joomla has adopted a new six-month release strategy for users to be able to update their CMS without waiting too long.

Here some of the new features of Joomla! 1.6:

New access controls:  For viewing and editing content with configurable user groups and viewing levels. It has a new Access Control List (ACL) that will let administrators have more control when creating groups and offering permissions to various sections of a site. This is a big deal, especially since Joomla is so frequently used in intranet environments.

One-click extension updates : Just as WordPress has a built-in plugin manager and auto-update tool, Joomla now does, too. This is great for administrators who have multiple sites with lots of extensions to manage.

Fresh new templates and semantic markup: To please the eye as well as the search engines. With template styles, designers can make variations of the same template that can be applied to specific sections or pages of a site.

Better Media Manager: For end users, the content manager is better than before, now supporting multiple-file uploads.

Installation improvements: allowing for multiple extension installations in one package, updatable with a single click

A user-defined category structure: Say goodbye to sections and hello to categories! You can create unlimited sub-categories (with unlimited depth) for ultimate hierarchy and taxonomy control.

Start and end publishing times: For modules with more control over where they display.

Joomla guarantees a more powerful and easy-to-use platform with this update as well as future improvements becoming an important web tool for individuals, corporations and one of the best CMS in the world.
